Balfour Arts Collective

Balfour Arts Collective - Do what you love while earning your high school diploma!

Balfour Arts Collective is an arts focused program offered to current Grade 8 and 9 students enrolling in Grade 9 or 10 next year. This unique program is intended for students with a passion for the Arts; anyone who loves to dance, paint, draw, act or perform on stage would be an ideal fit. Regardless of their artistic skill level, if a student loves the arts this program is a way for them to engage and feel connected in high school.

Balfour currently has an established visual art, dance and performing arts program that engages a large number of students. This semester the Collective team was able to pilot programing with a group of dancers and a group of visual artists by having each class blocked with an English class. Throughout this semester students have had the opportunity to meet curricular outcomes with an academic and artistic focus to show what they know through the passion area of their choice. Through this experience, the staff involved was able to create the framework for the new Balfour Arts Collective program that will be launched in the fall of 2018.

Next year, Collective classes will be blocked together allowing for more flexibility in activities, and more opportunity for out-of-school instruction and excursions. Ultimately, this means students will spend more time doing what they love, and will be more engaged. In addition, the program offers many other unique benefits including a focus on community connections, performance opportunities, preparation for careers in the arts, and travel. Students who currently train in an area of the arts will find this program will enrich their artistic skills. As well, the program has made it a priority to involve guest teachers and instructors with specialized knowledge on a regular basis.
