The staff of Rosemont Community School have an exciting opportunity for the Fall of 2020 that we would like to get some feedback on. As a staff, we have seen a lot of success with the use of a flexible afternoon recess. With the intent to build upon this success, we would like to use the same model in the morning. Students are not currently “missing” their afternoon recess, but rather, it is built into their afternoon based on what the teachers are working on in the classroom in order to maximize that crucial instruction time and to meet the age appropriate needs of that classroom.
As a staff, we also see the amount of class time taken up with solving recess conflict, following up with recess conflict and problem solving for a future recess. We would like to reroute this time back to instruction. With smaller numbers out on the playground at staggered times, we feel as though students can spread out, use all of the playground equipment at one time and positively interact with their peers.
