As you may or may not be aware, thousands of people across Canada are standing in solidarity with a Saskatchewan girl who faced adversity for wearing a traditional ribbon skirt to a formal event at her school. This traditional attire often boasts vibrant colors and ribbon patterns; and are worn by many women for many occasions.  For 10-year-old Isabella, the skirts hold a lot of power, "it represents strength, resilience, cultural identity and womanhood.  On the day Isabella was ridiculed for her skirt, she felt stripped of her power”.  Rosemont staff and students wish to stand in solidarity with Isabella and support the love and importance of the traditional ribbon skirt. On January 15th, Rosemont roadrunner staff and students participated in Rosemont Ribbon Skirt Day.  Staff and students created and proudly wore their ribbon skirts, ribbon shirts, or long skirts as a show of support. Alongside Rosemont Ribbon Skirt Day, Rosemont family embraced learning around ribbon skirts, history, and their significance throughout the week, alongside traditional smudging. Students were able to participate in class discussions, share ideas, support and get involved in social action.  Rosemont roadrunners stand together to honour and celebrate Indigenous culture!
